“Baccarat” is an Italian word meaning “zero”. There are indeed several versions of baccarat origin. A number of countries such as Italy and France claim the game as theirs.

According to one of the versions, baccarat was invented by Felix Falguierein, an Italian gambler. It was in the Middle Ages and gamblers played it with Tarot cards.

An old Etruscan ritual of the 9 gods was in the base on the game. Etruscan gods prayed on their tiptoes to a blonde virgin who threw a nine-sided die, the outcome of which decided her fate. If the blonde virgin threw 8 or a 9, she became the priestess; a 6 or 7 removed her from further religious activities; she threw less than 6, she went into the sea.

Baccarat appeared in France somewhere in 1490, where it was known as “Chemin de fer”. This game became a game for the French nobility for a long time before it became a casino game. Chemin de fer became very popular in England. The rules were changed as well as the game’s name, it started to be called European baccarat. Then, the game was brought in South America.

With the help of Tommy Renzoni this game appeared in the USA in the late 1950s as a mixture of European baccarat and “Chemin de fer”. Then the game was introduced in Dunes casino, one of the Las Vegas casinos that had notoriety. Since then the game started to increase in popularity. These days the game can be found everywhere.

We do not know for sure where Baccarat was invented, but the game of Baccarat is certain to be a very old game, its history counts centuries and it has travelled through countries and continents. This long journey led to different rules variations.

Though some rules vary from country to country, the style is the same. The game has kept its charm and this game still remains to be the game for the high rollers and rich people.
